I am an Associate Professor of Neuroscience and Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at The Ohio State University, where I also serve as Vice Chair of Research and Director of Clinical Research at the Belford Center for Spinal Cord Injury. I bring over 15 years of combined clinical and translational research expertise in neurotrauma, neurorehabilitation, nutrition and microbiome interventions. My federally funded translational research program focuses on spinal cord injury (SCI), gut microbiome, and dietary interventions. I have led multiple NIH- and NIDILRR-funded clinical trials, including studies on ketogenic and low-carbohydrate/high-protein diets for neurological recovery, metabolism, and bowel health. My work has provided some of the first evidence of gut dysbiosis in SCI and has tested novel dietary and electrical stimulation strategies to improve neurorecovery, muscle and gut health, and metabolic outcomes. In addition to running a productive research lab and spinal cord injury research center, I am experienced in: Clinical trial design and regulatory strategy (IRB, DSMB, multi-site coordination). Grant writing and peer review (NIH, NSF, PCORI, Department of Defense, foundations). Scientific and medical writing (40+ peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, protocols, white papers). Mentorship and education (trained postdocs, PhD students, medical residents, and early-career faculty). I regularly collaborate with academic institutions, federal agencies, and industry partners to design translational research and secure competitive funding. My expertise positions me to support clients in developing high-quality study designs, grant proposals, manuscripts, and translational strategies that meet both scientific and regulatory standards.
