Over the past three years, my research interest has been mainly focused on the study of adsorption, diffusion and growth mechanisms of 2D self-assembled structures of molecules on insulating surfaces. The combination of several theoretical tools (spanning from density functional theory (DFT) methods to classical nucleation theory and kinetic models such as rate equations) allowed me not only to understand the actual experimental results (based on atomic force microscopy experiments (AFM) ) but also to identify the key ingredients necessary for a more general and rational design of stable self-assembled architectures on insulating substrates. Moreover, after my master studies, I spent one year in the research group of Prof. Fernando Martin (Department of theoretical chemistry, Madrid) where we performed DFT and molecular dynamic simulations to study the fragmentation dynamics of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) molecules in collision with highly charged ions.
