I am a Research Scientist with an interest in how new technologies can be applied to biological research problems, particularly in the areas of biosensing, drug discovery and molecular interaction studies. My previous work was largely focused on characterising the 18 kDa translocator protein (TSPO); its function, structure and drug interactions. The TSPO is an integral membrane protein likely to have a key role in modulating mitochondrial energy production, and is a potential therapeutic target in conditions as diverse as diabetes, anxiety, and Alzheimer’s disease. As part of my doctoral research I worked on developing a system to study the structure of TSPO and its drug interactions in a lipid membrane environment. I constructed supported protein-lipid bilayers and studied their drug interactions using quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), and their structure and composition with neutron reflectometry. Additionally, I used these techniques to investigate interactions between drugs and the lipid membrane, as a potential source of off-target effects of these drugs. Furthermore, I was involved in the characterisation of a novel TSPO gene knockout mouse. I hold a PhD in the area of Life Sciences, and a Bachelor of Science (Hons I) with first class Honours in Physiology and additional majors in Neuroscience and Computer Science. My laboratory and experimental skills include recombinant protein production and purification, small angle neutron and X-ray scattering, quartz crystal microbalance experiments, Langmuir-Blodgettry, impedance spectroscopy, primary and cell line culture, tissue cryo-sectioning, receptor autoradiography and radioligand binding. Additionally, I have programming skills in C, C++ and Java. I am open to a variety of collaborations and consulting opportunities, and particularly interested in lending my expertise towards the design and feasibility assessment of experimental work, in carrying out literature research, and providing English language writing and editing services.
