The over-arching goal of my research program is to uncover new information that increases the basic understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms controlling pathogen-specific immunity at the mucosal interface. While my work has encompassed a variety of organisms, there is a major focus on parasitic helminths (worms), which are a major cause of morbidity in both human and animal populations across the globe. The work we have published through collaborative efforts and those spearheaded in my own laboratory has produced 60+ publications to date, with important contributions that have increased the understanding of key immunological cell types including: alternatively activated /M2 macrophages, eosinophil effector functions, Type 2 innate lymphocytes (ILC2), and conventional T helper 2 cells (TH2). A major theme of my program is the process of wound healing, and my work has helped to address important major gaps in the understanding reparative cytokines in the Trefoil factor family (TFF). One of our recent publications identified a family of orphan type 1 transmembrane proteins in the leucine rich repeat and nogo interacting protein family (LINGO) as putative TFF receptors, which shed's important light in this poorly understood field. Additionally, my laboratory has active ongoing projects focused on human helminth infection, dendritic cells as unconventional cellular sources of interleukin 33 (IL-33), Wnt pathway signaling, and transgenesis in parasitic nematodes to study the basic tenets of antigen-specific CD4+ T cell biology. Collectively, this research program uses a combination of murine, veterinary animal, and human model systems to shed new light upon parasite-host interactions, mucosal immunology, and regenerative medicine.
