I am a PhD virologist, science communicator, and teacher. My scientific expertise is in viral entry, HIV-1 Env proteins, and molecular method development. I completed my PhD in the laboratory of Dr. Walther Mothes at Yale University where I developed a new method to measure viral fusion kinetics with a time resolution of 2 minutes. I developed this method using HIV-1 Env proteins, but the method can be applied to many other viral and non-viral fusion machines. The method was published in Nature in Stacey, Hrebik, et al. The conserved HIV-1 spacer peptide 2 triggers matrix lattice maturation (2025). I also contributed to a second method to measure viral fusion interfaces by cryo-electron tomography that was published in Nature in Li, et al. HIV-1 Env trimers asymmetrically engage CD4 receptors in membranes (2023). Additionally, I have extensive experience in science communication to both scientific and lay audiences. I have researched, written, performed, edited, and published multiple science communication podcasts and many live science communication talks to adult lay audiences. I won second place at the 2025 Yale University 3-Minute Thesis Competition, where I presented a live 3-minute talk on my thesis research to a lay audience. I also have more than 5 years of experience guiding people through creating presentations, posters, and talks to present their science to both professional and lay audiences. Finally, I have over 10 years of experience teaching in higher education in settings ranging from one-on-one tutoring to large lecture classes.
