I'm a clinician-scientist and founder working at the intersection of surgery, human factors, and health technology. I trained as a general surgeon (MB ChB, MRCS(Ed)) and hold a PhD in medical informatics and surgical human factors from the University of Edinburgh, where I now lead the MSc in Patient Safety and Clinical Human Factors and hold an honorary academic post at the Usher Institute. My research programme, MARS (Mental Readiness for Surgery), applies continuous physiological measurement — electrodermal activity and heart rate variability — to understand cognitive load, stress, and performance in surgical teams. My doctoral thesis, "Surgical Sabermetrics," spanned seven empirical studies and helped build one of the largest in-vivo physiological datasets in surgical performance research. This work runs in collaboration with Harvard Medical School and the Scottish Rugby Union, and has produced publications in the Journal of Surgical Education, Annals of Surgery, and beyond. I bring deep technical skills in EDA signal processing, HRV, statistical modelling in R, and human factors frameworks such as SEIPS 2.0. Alongside my academic work, I founded Metriqx, an evidence-led advisory practice focused on wearables, sensors, and software as a medical device. My core expertise is clinical validation and evidence assessment — separating what health technology genuinely proves from what it merely claims — supporting device companies, investors, and health systems through validation, due diligence, and digital safety. I am also a certified Clinical Safety Officer. I publish evidence-led analysis of wearable health technology through my platform, Calibrated, and am a genuine advocate for wearables done rigorously and safely.
