PERSONAL PROFILE Professional, motivated, and engaged scientist and educator. Committed to exploring and communicating topics in science and nature with a deep-seated desire to share knowledge with others. CURRENT RESEARCH: Membrane bound proteins conduct signaling across cells and regulate the movement of matter in and out of cells. Most drugs target membrane bound proteins, and understanding their structure and function is essential for drug design. I use a variety of techniques to probe the interaction of these membrane proteins with the lipids that form cell walls. I concentrate on atomic level detail, the interaction of individual membrane proteins with their surrounding lipid environments, using solid and solution state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR). As an additional project, I investigate the distribution of lead contamination in New York City soils. Lead exposure poses substantial health risks, especially to children. By investigating distribution of lead, its soil chemistry and its sources, we seek to inform how best to respond to lead as a major health risk. EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE: As a professional high school science teacher I focused on implementing a rigorous curriculum linked to national education standards. I promoted achievement by engaging and motivating students with project-based curricula that sought to add real-world relevancy to classroom experiences. Concerned by the narrow focus and constrained opportunities afforded by many area high schools, I worked to found the NET Charter High School, an open-admissions alternative school for at-risk students who were removed from or failed to thrive at traditional schools.
