Brain development occurs with rapid expansion of neural stem cells. Shaping these into functioning neurons requires a fine-tuned program of gene expression, to ensure the right genes are activated in the right cells at the right time. Specialized enzymes control these programs by placing epigenetic marks on DNA, like conductors annotating sheet music. Sometimes when mutated, the conductors can't write, read, or erase these marks and the code gets scrambled, causing rare developmental disability syndromes. In the lab, I work to uncover gene programs affected by these mutations, to see if targeted postnatal strategies can be developed to rescue cognitive functions in patients. Beyond the lab, I explore ways for scientists to act as non-state actors of diplomacy between industrialized economies and the developing world. By teaching hands-on, participatory STEM workshops in Latin America, I hope to empower the next generation of thinkers toward competitive involvement in an increasingly global world.
