Dr Barabona is a clinician and an infectious diseases researcher with a specific interest in human viral pathogens including HIV, SAR-COV-2, hepatitis, and Human Herpes Viruses. In his research career, he has studied the genetic variability of HIV strains that are circulating in the hyperendemic region of East Africa and its relationship to the viral adaptation to the host. In addition, Dr Barabona is conducting studies to investigate HIV-related inflammation and the role of viral co-infections and currently SAR-COV-2 infections in the context of the East African population.
