I have a broad neuroscience background, with focused training in behavior genetics relevant to the study of schizophrenia spectrum disorders. My current research involves analyzing the relationships of biomarkers associated with an attenuated lifespan in a chronic schizophrenia sample including: C-reactive protein, body mass index, and Framingham cardiovascular disease risk. I have also been assessing the roles of cytokines, chemokines, F2-isoprostanes, and neurotrophins in relation to age related changes in cognitive and functional outcomes in schizophrenia. I have assisted with analyzing age and illness influences that are associated with acquiring wisdom in a hospice patient sample. In addition to the contributions described above, I am working on a study to investigate the relationship of leaky gut markers in association with incidence of systemic inflammation and metabolic syndrome in schizophrenia. My graduate and early postdoctoral work was primarily focused on human behavior genetics relevant to schizophrenia spectrum disorders. I assisted with recruitment and administration of cognitive tasks (JOVI, RISE, AX-CPT, DPX, CCE, MSCEIT, HVLT), psychiatric assessments (SCID, BPRS), premorbid and functional outcome scales (WTAR, UPSA, SLOF), and data compiling for a multi-site schizophrenia cognition study. My dissertation work was a behavioral genetics study to identify SNP correlates of a schizophrenia subtype characterized by perceptual organization and premorbid functioning deficits. I completed this study with psychiatric assessments (DIGS, PANSS, MINI, SAPS, SANS), premorbid and smoking scales (PAS, SHIPLEY, FTND-PRISM), visual perceptual tasks (Jittered Orientation Visual Integration (JOVI), Ebbinghaus Illusion, Illusory Contours – FatThin Paradigm, Numerosity) genetic databases (dbSNP, HapMap, UCSC Genome Browser, SYSNPs) and analysis software (SYSTAT, SPSS, PLINK). I compiled and analyzed data for a novel scale of lifespan functional outcomes relevant to schizophrenia spectrum disorders. My research experiences as an undergraduate research assistant and senior laboratory technician were primarily focused on behavior genetics of neuropsychiatric disorders with the use of mouse models. My undergraduate research primarily involved the use of PCR and UCSC Genome Browser to identify quantitative trait loci associated with phenotypic variation in a mouse model of neural tube defects. I was involved with the genotyping (PCR and Southern Blotting) of transgenic and knock out mouse models of autism and anxiety disorders and assisting with various methods of behavioral phenotype characterization (Open Field Test, Contextual and Cued Fear Conditioning, Elevated Plus Maze, Maternal Behavior and the Morris Water Maze). I was also responsible for the subsequent histological preparation (Perfusion, Cyrosectioning) of mouse brains and analyses of amygdala enriched gene, immediate early gene, and protein expression (In Situ Hybridization and Immunohistochemistry).
