I received my PhD in Social Psychology (with a Quantitative minor) in May 2018 after completing my dissertation with the support of a fellowship at the Institute for the Study of Human Flourishing at the University of Oklahoma. I carried out my doctoral studies psychology under the supervision of Dr. Jennifer Barnes, and I have continued in her lab as a postdoctoral fellow, mentoring undergraduates and graduate students and concluding several ongoing research projects. My own research program has focused on issues that arise at the intersection of morality, imagination, and narrative. Much of my published work concerns the psychology of fiction and nonfiction narrative: how the stories we engage with in TV and print affect our personal narratives and how we interact with the world. I have also worked as a data specialist for an educational grant. My statistical expertise has allowed me to collaborate on various projects (e.g., I did the analyses for an article in the Journal of Human Evolution). I have extensive experience designing studies (randomized experiments and correlational projects) and using the Qualtrics platform to collect data (see my blog about data collection: https://jessicaeblack.org/research/). I work with SAS, SPSS, MPlus, and R. I have extensive experience with tests and measurement (both classical test theory and IRT), and have developed 3 of my own scales. My most recent project involves scraping data from Twitter to explore what makes young adult book film adaptations successful. Fee discount for grad students and introductory projects.
