I am John Daniel P. Ong, an Assistant Professor (from February 2015-present) at the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB), one of the top universities in the country. I finished my BS degree in Biology Major in Microbiology (2011) and my MS degree in Microbiology Minor in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (2014) in the same university. My MS thesis was about plant growth-promoting diazotrophs from salt-affected areas in the Philippines. Biochemical, physiological and molecular characterization (16S and nifH gene detection) of the selected isolates were performed. This study was presented at the 9th International Kasetsart University Science and Technology Annual Research Symposium held at Kasetsart University on June 1-3, 2017. The paper was published in the Philippine Journal of Crop Science in 2018. After my postgraduate studies, I was involved in cacao (Theobroma cacao) research at the National Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, UPLB where I studied the microbial succession in cacao fermentation using molecular and phylogenetic analyses. The study was presented the 41st Philippine Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (PSBMB) Annual Convention held at the Marco Polo Plaza Hotel, Cebu City, on 4-5 December 2014. I was involved in the project "Capacity Building of Tertiary Educators in the Teaching of Selected Microbiology Courses" where we trained several educators from different Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) across the country. Currently, I am involved in a project entitled: "Taxonomic and Functional Diversity Profiling of Soil Rhizosphere Microbial Communities in Forests Over Limestone Ecosystem" of the CON-Kaigangan Program. I have mentored many thesis students and have edited many scientific papers.
