My research experience began during my BSc where I did a year’s sabbatical in the Endocrinology department at St Thomas hospital. I then went on to do an MSc in Bioinformatics to ensure that I had fundamental knowledge as to the power and advantages of numerous scientific tools used regularly by scientists such as sequence analysis. I did my PhD at the Institute of Cellular and Molecular Sciences (ICMS) at Barts and the London, Queen Mary's School of Medicine and Dentistry where I investigated the regulation of epidermal lipogenesis by the enzymes sterol regulatory element binding proteins 1 and 2 (SREBP). My broad field of interest is Biology and Cancer Therapeutics. During my first post-doc, at the ICR, I was focused on understanding mechanisms that determine response and resistance to anti-angiogenic therapy. My second post-doc was focused on metabolism in angiogenesis. During my post-doctoral positions I have, along with my supervisors, peer reviewed research articles for academic journals including Cancer Research, Nature and Cell along with co-reviewing grant applications. I have also obtained my own funding including a Marie Curie intra-European fellowship. My current position is at the ICR as a Senior Scientific Officer working on Prostate Cancer and Next Generation Sequencing. When not in the laboratory, I am mostly focussing on writing research articles, putting together grant proposals and peer reviewing submitted articles. In depth knowledge of the following assays: Molecular biology: RT-PCR, qPCR, ddPCR, primer design, molecular cloning, transformation of competent bacteria, extraction and purification of DNA and RNA (from varying materials including CTCs and FFPE samples), DNA comet assay, DNA sequencing, RNA sequencing. Biochemistry: radioimmunoassay, HPLC, western blotting, immunoprecipitation, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, whole mount in situ hybridization, metabolic flux assays. Cellular biology: culture of primary human cells and cancer cell lines, immunocytochemistry, confocal microscopy, flow cytometry, cell proliferation and migration assays, transfection/ transduction of cells, CTC isolation. Model systems: in vitro angiogenesis assays (e.g. aortic ring assay, retina vascularity assay, endothelial tube formation assays), epidermal organotypic culture, embryonic skin explant culture, mouse subcutaneous tumour models, transgenic mouse models, patient derived organoid models, patient derived xenograft models.
