My scholarship in social gerontology has focused on definitions, types, and measurement of geriatric depression and the relationship of depression to normal aging, activity participation, and to related constructs such as loneliness and grief. I have focused on these topics within the broader context of coping with common challenges of aging, e.g., chronic illness, moves to congregate living, early-stage dementia, and spousal caregiving. I have conducted these studies through use of both quantitative and qualitative methods, including survey and measurement development, semi-structured interviewing, and a variety of statistical and qualitative analytical methods. I have particular interest and expertise in systematic reviews of the literature. As a professor at Case Western Reserve University and at Walden University, I enjoyed helping others with their research projects. I now serve as a consultant, researcher or editor on a number of academic and social science projects.
