My main research interest is in understanding how the interaction between millions and billions of brain cells takes information from our senses to make decisions and guide behaviour. I'm particularly interested in how our brains create and use memories of past experiences to shape decisions, and how our brains deal with the inherent uncertainty and time pressures of the real world. I believe the right approach is to study brain activity associated with natural behaviour and stimuli and apply sophisticated data analysis techniques to disentangle this complex system, rather than exquisite experimental control to isolate specific cells or circuits. I have therefore developed considerable expertise in applying various forms of complex data analysis techniques to neural data, especially electrophysiological data.
