Salt tolerance in mungbean is associated with controlling Na and Cl transport across roots, regulating Na and Cl accumulation in chloroplasts and maintaining high K in root and leaf mesophyll cells @article{347ef7459ec44883810beb8b6be5b807, title = "Salt tolerance in mungbean is associated with controlling Na and Cl transport across roots, regulating Na and Cl accumulation in chloroplasts and maintaining high K in root and leaf mesophyll cells", abstract = "Salinity tolerance requires coordinated responses encompassing salt exclusion in roots and tissue/cellular compartmentation of salt in leaves. We investigated the possible control points for salt ions transport in roots and tissue tolerance to Na+ and Cl– in leaves of two contrasting mungbean genotypes, salt-tolerant Jade AU and salt-sensitive BARI Mung-6, grown in nonsaline and saline (75 mM NaCl) soil. Cryo-SEM X-ray microanalysis was used to determine concentrations of Na, Cl, K, Ca, Mg, P, and S in various cell types in roots related to the development of apoplastic barriers, and in leaves related to photosynthetic performance. Jade AU exhibited superior salt exclusion by accumulating higher [Na] in the inner cortex, endodermis, and pericycle with reduced [Na] in xylem vessels and accumulating [Cl] in cortical cell vacuoles compared to BARI Mung-6. Jade AU maintained higher [K] in root cells than BARI Mung-6. In leaves, Jade AU maintained lower [Na] and [Cl] in chloroplasts and preferentially accumulated [K] in mesophyll cells than BARI Mung-6, resulting in higher photosynthetic efficiency. Salinity tolerance in Jade AU was associated with shoot Na and Cl exclusion, effective regulation of Na and Cl accumulation in chloroplasts, and maintenance of high K in root and leaf mesophyll cells.", keywords = "cellular distribution, chloride, cryo-SEM X-ray microanalysis, endodermis, mungbean, salinity tolerance, sodium, suberin lamellae", author = "Iqbal, {Md Shahin} and Clode, {Peta L.} and Malik, {Al Imran} and William Erskine and Lukasz Kotula", note = "Publisher Copyright: {\textcopyright} 2024 The Authors. Genetic Analysis in Grain Legumes [Vigna radiata (L.)Wilczek] for Yield Improvement and Identifying Heterotic Hybrids @article{3a36879a603b459684863b8bd641988f, title = "Genetic Analysis in Grain Legumes [Vigna radiata (L.)Wilczek] for Yield Improvement and Identifying Heterotic Hybrids", abstract = "Six mungbean parental lines and their fifteen F1s produced from half-diallel mating design were investigated for combining ability and heterosis in terms of a yield and its components. Results showed highly significant variations among the parents and F1s, suggesting a wide genetic variability for the studied characters. Analysis of variance indicated that genotypes mean square values, general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were highly significant (pU+2264 0.001) for all measured traits except for days to flowering, days to maturity, and pod length indicating genetic diversity of parents and both additive and non-additive gene effects in the inheritance of the measured traits. A higher effect of SCA than GCA for plant height and seeds per pod suggests the preponderance of non-additive gene effects in the expression of characters. Based on per se performance and GCA, BARI Mung-1, PS-7, and BMXK1-14004 were the best general combiners for yield per plant. In the context of SCA, hybrids BMXK1-14004U+78 Sonali mung, BMXK1-14004U+78 PS-7, BMXK1-14004U+78 BINA Mung-8, SukumarU+78 PS-7, and BARI Mung-1U+78 BINA Mung-8 were good specific combiners. BMXK1-14004U+78 Sonali mung and BMXK1-14004U+78 PS-7 were the best heterotic hybrids for yield and yield-contributing traits. These parents and crosses could be utilized for further use in breeding programs to improve yields in mungbean crops.", keywords = "GCA, half-diallel, heterosis, mungbean, SCA, yield and yield-related traits", author = "Azam, {Md Golam} and Umakanta Sarke and Hossain, {Md Faruk} and Iqbal, {Md Shahin} and Islam, {Md Rafiqul} and Hossain, {Md Faruk} and Sezai Ercisli and Raziye Kul and Amine Assouguem and Al-Huqail, {Arwa Abdulkreem} and Mohamed, {Hanan R.H.} and Ilaria Peluso", year = "2022", month = jul, day = "1", doi = "10.3390/plants11131774", language = "English", volume = "11", journal = "Plants", issn = "2223-7747", publisher = "MDPI AG", number = "13", } .
