I have extensive experience experimental design, troubleshooting, and analysis in a variety of biological fields. I have authored and edited numerous academic publications and grants. I have extensive experience in reviewing scientific literature, and extracting the salient points for my research. In general, I am interested in the relationship between a protein's structure and its biological function. The goal of my current research is to determine a high resolution structure of the yeast spindle pole body (SPB). The SPB is the microtubule organizing center in budding yeast, and it consists of a multi-protein array that spans the yeast nucleus. This work involves x-ray crystallography, electron microscopy, various biophysical methods, and protein expression and purification in bacteria and insect cells. As a postdoctoral fellow, I investigated the role of the ganglioside GM3 in inhibiting wound healing under diabetic conditions. I also developed and tested a novel siRNA-conjugated nanoparticle that was able to reverse this wound healing defect. This work involved mammalian cell culture, mouse surgery and dissection, qPCR, preparation and analysis of histological samples, and various microscopy techniques. As a PhD student, I investigated the structures of the kinesin molecular motor tail domains and how these structures facilitate ligand binding. This work involved electron microscopy, CD spectroscopy, SAXS, x-ray crystallography, NMR, and ITC. During and after my undergraduate studies I worked in various laboratories as a student or a research technician, and learned a variety of molecular and cell biology techniques.
