Understanding the internal microarchitecture of these spiny structures is essential for evaluating their mechanical performance and potential applications in biomimetic design. Methods \& Results We performed high-resolution microCT scans on quills from eight mammalian species: African Porcupine(Hystrix sp., 60 kV, 15 W, 3 µm, 430 ms, Al 1 mm filter), Bicolored-spined Porcupine (Coendou bicolor, 40 kV, 15 W, 2 µm, 1100 ms), Cairo Spiny Mouse (Acomys cahirinus, 40 kV, 15 W, 1.59 µm, 1200 ms), Echidna(Tachyglossus aculeatus, 40 kV, 15 W, 3.17 µm, 1100 ms), European Hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus, 60 kV, 15 W, 2 µm, 550 ms), Greater Hedgehog Tenrec (Setifer setosus, 40 kV, 15 W, 2 µm, 1100 ms), North African Hedgehog (Atelerix algirus, 60 kV, 15 W, 2 µm, 700 ms). Each quill was scanned to produce both longitudinal and cross-sectional datasets. All scans were reconstructed using TESCAN{\textquoteright}s Aquila software. Our microCT reconstructions reveal species-specific differences in quill structure, including variations in wall thickness, internal cavities, and medullary complexity. The porcupine quills, echidnas and hedgehogs have different in density and architectural structure and different solid profiles. Conclusions These microCT datasets form the foundation for upcoming Finite Element Analysis (FEA), which will model stress resistance and mechanical efficiency. Fluorescent Secrets Beneath the Skin: @conference{79694474312248548bcb47733fa39e4d, title = "Fluorescent Secrets Beneath the Skin:: Exploring Bone and Iridophore-Based Fluorescence in Hemidactylus turcicus (Squamata: Geckonidae)", abstract = "Aim Biofluorescence is well documented in marine organisms, but its presence and function in terrestrial vertebrates remain largely unexplored. In reptiles, limited evidence points to fluorescence mechanisms such as bone-based or iridophore-induced fluorescence, possibly linked to communication, camouflage, or mate signaling. However, no studies to date have examined fluorescence in Hemidactylus turcicus, a widespread nocturnal Mediterranean gecko. This study addresses that gap by investigating fluorescence distribution in a juvenile specimen. Methods \& Results A juvenile H. turcicus was opportunistically encountered in a garden adjacent to the microscopy lab at Istanbul Medipol University. The specimen was briefly examined under an AxioZoom V16 stereo epifluorescence microscope (Carl Zeiss, Germany) using two excitation wavelengths: 488 nm (green channel, 520/40 BP emission filter) and 561 nm (red channel, 610/50 BP filter). No invasive procedures were applied, and the gecko was released unharmed back into its natural habitat on the same day. Green fluorescence was observed in the periocular area and on the dorsal head surface under 488 nm excitation. Under 561 nm light, red fluorescence appeared in the frontal bone region, visible through the transparent dermal layer. These patterns suggest the presence of both iridophore- and bone-based fluorescence mechanisms. Conclusions This is the first report of biofluorescence in H. turcicus, indicating structural adaptations for light transmission in the dermal and cranial regions. The findings raise new questions about the ecological roles of fluorescence in geckos, particularly during juvenile stages or nocturnal activity. These viviparous salamanders are confined to karstic limestone formations along the southern Anatolian coast and some islands. We here study the genetic differentiation within and among 118 populations of all seven Lyciasalamandra species across the entire genus{\textquoteright} distribution. Based on circa 900 base pairs of fragments of the mitochondrial 16SrDNA and ATPase genes, we analysed the spatial haplotype distribution as well as the genetic structure and demographic history of populations. We used 253 geo-referenced populations and CHELSA climate data to infer species distribution models which we projected on climatic conditions of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Within all but one species, distinct phyloclades were identified, which only in parts matched current taxonomy. Most haplotypes (78\%) were private to single populations. Sometimes population genetic parameters showed contradicting results, although in several cases they indicated recent population expansion of phyloclades. Climatic suitability of localities currently inhabited by salamanders was significantly lower during the LGM compared to recent climate. All data indicated a strong degree of isolation among Lyciasalamandra populations, even within phyloclades. Given the sometimes high degree of haplotype differentiation between adjacent populations, they must have survived periods of deteriorated climates during the Quaternary on the spot. Here we reconstruct a dated phylogenetic tree of 262 lacertid species based on a supermatrix relying on novel phylogenomic datasets and fossil calibrations. Diversification of lacertids was accompanied by an increasing disparity among occupied bioclimatic niches, especially in the last 10 Ma, during a period of progressive global cooling. Temperate species also underwent a genome-wide slowdown in molecular substitution rates compared to tropical and desert-adapted lacertids. Evaporative water loss and preferred temperature are correlated with bioclimatic parameters, indicating physiological adaptations to climate. Tropical, but also some populations of cool-adapted species experience maximum temperatures close to their preferred temperatures. The first comprehensive venom characterization of the regional endemic Transcaucasian Nose-horned Viper (Vipera ammodytes transcaucasiana) and the Transdanubian Sand Viper (Vipera ammodytes montandoni) is reported employing a combination of intact mass profiling and bottom-up proteomics. The bottom-up analysis of both subspecies identified the major snake protein families of viper venoms. Furthermore, intact mass profiling revealed the presence of two tripeptidic metalloprotease inhibitors and their precursors. While previous reports applied multivariate analysis techniques to clarify the taxonomic status of the subspecies, an accurate classification of Vipera ammodytes transcaucasiana is still part of the ongoing research. The comparative analysis of the viper venoms on the proteome level reveals a close relationship between the Vipera ammodytes subspecies, which could be considered to clarify the classification of the Transcaucasian Nose-horned Viper. However, the slightly different ratio of some venom components could be indicating interspecific variations of the two studied subspecies or intraspecies alternations based on small sample size. Additionally, we performed a bioactivity screening with the crude venoms against several human cancerous and non-cancerous cell lines, which showed interesting results against a human breast adenocarcinoma epithelial cell line.
