As a member of the Pain Genetics Laboratory of Dr. Jeffrey S. Mogil, she developed a novel preclinical animal model of migraine and identified sex differences in pain and analgesia. After obtaining her Ph.D. in 2009, she pursued postdoctoral research at Northwestern University (Chicago, IL), where she characterized sensory, affective, and brain abnormalities in patients with chronic pain conditions. In 2010, Mona initiated a new line of research in The Laboratory for Music Perception, Cognition and Expertise of Dr. Daniel J. Levitin, New York Times best-selling author of "This is Your Brain on Music". By administering the opioid blocker Naltrexone to participants, she demonstrated that music induces feelings of pleasure via the same neurochemical pathways as other rewards (e.g. food). Mona’s published works on the neurochemistry of music have garnered international press coverage, including in Newsweek, Huffington Post, and CBC Health. Her peers have also recognized her innovative work, as evidenced by high-impact papers (including Trends in Cognitive Sciences, Nature Methods, and Scientific Reports) and prestigious grants and awards, including The Louise Edwards Award for Research on Pain, The McGill Annual Pain Day Prize and The Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) Operating Grant. Mona is currently based in Montréal, where she works as a scientific writer and consultant for a diverse clientele, including Fortune 500 companies and technology startups. Recently, she collaborated with Live Nation Entertainment (New York, NY) on a large-scale consumer neuroscience study resulting in a presentation at the 2018 Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, a marketing white paper entitled "The Power of Live: Global Live Music Fan Study for Brands" and press coverage in Billboard Magazine.
