During my undergraduate studies at Miami University, I taught Microbiology lab courses to non-science majors and tutored at the learning center in Calculus and the sciences. After graduating from Miami University in 2001 with a BA in Microbiology and a minor in Spanish, I joined the Integrated Biomedical Science program (IBGP) at The Ohio State University. I was attracted to the program for its multidisciplinary approach to science and the wide range of research opportunities available to graduate students. While in graduate school, I presented my research findings at local and national seminars and conferences and mentored students in the laboratory. After completion of my education at OSU, I relocated to Wake Forest University (Winston-Salem, NC) to begin my postdoctoral studies in Viral Immunology. One of my major responsibilities as a post doctoral research fellow was to train and educate other students in the lab. I also conducted my own experiments on Simian Virus 5 (SV5) and specifically infection in a murine model of respiratory infection to elucidate innate mechanisms of resistance to lung infection. I had to relocate and continue my post doctoral studies in Viral Immunology at UCLA (Los Angeles, CA) due to a change in my husband's residency track. There I studied a unique subset of natural killer cells and their interaction with dendritic cells in the context of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection using human blood samples. After a few months as a post doctoral research scholar, my mentor resigned from UCLA and moved her laboratory out of state. Since I had given birth to my daughter in March 2008, I decided to stay home with her until my husband finished his residency in California. During this time I also earned a Certificate in Project Management in Biotechnology from the University of California at San Diego (UCSD). Since then I have taught Biology and Microbiology as an Adjunct Professor at various colleges and am currently teaching online at Ivy Tech College in Elkhart, IN.
