I maintain my research interests on gene regulation by the NF-kappaB family of transcription factors. The very nature of this process necessitates that I must understand the fundamental molecular biology of eukaryotic gene transcription. The corollary, therefore, is that my expertise in this area is regularly sought by colleagues from across the Medical School working in fields such as oncology, immunology and cardiovascular science. See https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/oncology-metabolism/staff/chapman for further details 1) Understanding how NF-kappaB and epigenetic markers function to regulate genome function in human myometrium using ChIP-on-chip/ChIP-seq. Funded by the Sheffield Teaching Hospital Charitable Trust, The Medical Faculty Research and Innovation Fund and The Department of Human Metabolism. The work is published in Cookson et al. (2015). Mol. Hum. Reprod. 21:864. 2) Investigating how NF-kappaB and other inflammatory mediators regulate ion channel expression in human myometrium and decidua. Funded by a Wellcome Trust grant of £280,000 to Dr. Raheela Khan (PI University of Nottingham at Derby) and me. This work has been successful and is ongoing. A paper describing the physiological impacts of inflammation on ion channel function is currently being prepared by Dr. Khan. Aspects of the molecular biology data contributed by my lab are now published Waite et al., (2014). Front. Physiol. 5:26. 3) Defining the mechanism by which NF-kappaB-induced inflammation controls Gs expression in the human myometrium. Funded by my first MRC project grant of £447,201. That work is published in J. Biol. Chem. The work is published in Webster et al. (2013) J. Biol. Chem. 288:6704 and was the focus of a BBC science article (www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-216289). I have also developed interest in biomedical science education for both medical undergraduates and post-graduates. I have already developed new lines of interest, two of which have resulted in peer-reviewed papers. 1) SBAs for the Part 1 MRCOG. Andrew Sizer and Neil Chapman. RCOG Press, London 2012. ISBN: 978-1-906985-58-5 2) Describing a framework of simple clinical skills for the medical elective placements. The work is published: [Chapman and Press, Student BMJ 2016;24:i2049]. 3) Accidental hypothermia - examining the effectiveness of mountain rescue casualty bags for casualty insulation.
