I am an ambitious and published scientist who is experienced in many scientific disciplines including Biology, Chemistry, and Engineering. I have recently received my doctorate in biomedical engineering and have more than 8 years of post-baccalaureate research experience. I wrote and was awarded the prestigious National Institute of Health’s Ruth L. Kirschstein Predoctoral Individual National Research Service Award and Fellowship, presented at national and international scientific conferences, have co-written NIH-R01 grants (under review) and have published 8 peer-reviewed scientific articles with 3 more in the review stage, including my major work under review with the acclaimed journal, Nature Communications. My knowledge in the areas of molecular and cellular biology, anatomy and physiology, medicinal and organic chemistry, developmental biology, biotechnology, biomedical science, stem cell biology, genetics, biomaterials, tissue engineering, immunology, and more combined with my exceptional writing and organizational skills make me perfectly suited for a career in research and development. During my time at UB I have developed technologies that promote angiogenesis and vascular regeneration within the body as well as study the role of inflammation in this process. My initial work focused on promoting angiogenesis through engineering of proteins, specifically VEGF and FGF9. VEGF is well known to be essential in angiogenesis and it is now known that FGF9 plays a role in the stabilization and muscle integration of neo-vessels. I engineered both proteins to contain a fusion domain capable of covalent binding to fibrin, a clinically relevant biomaterial. This biomedical technology was used to induce angiogenesis around induced bone growth as well as mucosal gland regeneration in two distinct projects. Following this, the focus of my projects involved engineering implantable tissue engineered vascular grafts in the pre-clinical sheep model. In this project I utilized the FDA approved biomaterial-porcine small intestinal submucosa, conjugated with the anti-coagulant heparin and further functionalized with VEGF. VEGF binds to the heparin via it’s heparin binding domain within the protein. In earlier work I demonstrated VEGF’s ability to capture angiogenic cells from physiological flow conditions. Upon implantation, these grafts remained patent for over 6 months and were comprised of a complete and functional endothelium by 1-month post-implantation. These grafts have gone on to pre-clinical trials through a company started from our lab, Angiograft, LLC. Though I am not part of this company (due to being a student at the time of startup), the graft developed was primarily of my design. Furthermore, I engineered these grafts to sub-millimeter size in a mouse study in which I collaborated with Dr. Christopher Breuer of Nationwide Children’s hospital. In this study we examined the cellular and immunological responses. Lastly, these grafts also led the way to my primary study in which I developed the methodology to harness the immune system, primarily the monocyte/macrophage system to regenerate the endothelium of vascular grafts.
