Innovative scientist with 8+ years experience of developing elegant solutions to important problems in pharmacology and cell biology. Extensive working knowledge of microscopy, flow cytometry and biochemical assays. Advanced expertise in antibiotics, cell signaling and aging. Passionate about science communication, including writing, editing, peer reviewing and outreach. Our cells detect myriad environmental cues and mount appropriate responses. Breakdown of cellular signaling leads to several diseases. Understanding the ability of cells to communicate with their surroundings is the central goal of my research interests. In post doctoral research, I am developing a multi-disciplinary approach to determine the mechanisms of aging-related changes in cell signaling. My graduate research focused on determining the sequence of events involved in antibiotic action on single bacterial cells. In addition to research, I am passionate about scientific mentoring and have advised 3 undergraduates and 1 graduate student on their original research projects. Several of my popular science articles have been published on websites, newspapers and science magazines. As Science Ambassador of the Morehead Planetarium at UNC Chapel Hill, I have conducted live science demos for middle school kids as well as the general public. As a peer reviewer, I have reviewed original research manuscripts for several journals, including the Journal of Biological Chemistry.
