Research scientist with broad expertise in molecular and cell biology, and in the genetic engineering of animal models. In-depth knowledge of molecular and cell biology, especially with respect to the following areas: genetics, cell motility, membrane trafficking and host-pathogen interaction. Extensive experience in molecular cloning. Experience in pharmacokinetic modelling. Technical skills: - molecular cloning - confocal microscopy (live cell imaging and IF) - flow cytometry - protein purification - western, Southern and northern blotting - RT-qPCR - mammalian cell tissue culture - automated amino acid analysis - preparative scale HPLC - image analysis (ImageJ) and statistical analysis (R language) Research Projects Post-doctoral researcher, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology Dr Jason Chin’s group. Expanding the genetic code. Post-doctoral researcher, University of California, Irvine Investigating the role of intracellular transport during Chlamydia infection. Demonstrated that COPI but not COPII is required for the growth of the chlamydial inclusion. University of Cambridge, MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology Ph.D. Project: The role of the endocytic cycle in the motility of the social amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum Demonstrated that the turnover of the plasma membrane is required to sustain cell motility. This was a new finding, which led research into an area of biology previously unconnected with cell motility. As part of my work, I produced small pieces of software that speeded up the analysis of data. I also improved existing experimental protocols and designed new assays. University College London BSc Research Project: Characterisation of mouse macrophage cell line IC-21 and its response to CSF-1 with respect to primary macrophages (Dr Anne Ridley’s group, Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research) Established that the IC-21 cell line is not suitable for cell motility studies.
