During my studies, I became fascinated by the extraordinary complexity of mechanisms that regulate the expression of genes involved in development and in particular diseases, like cancer. More specifically, I developed a major interest in DNA metabolism (replication and repair) and its relation with genetic diseases. During my BSc, I analyzed through PCR-based techniques the 15q11-q13 and 7q31-33 regions that contain candidate genes predisposing to Autism in order to identify rearrangements. For my MSc, my project focused on the characterization of a human DNA helicase called RTEL1. The data I produced contributed to show, that this helicase interacts with components of the replisome, is involved in several DNA repair pathways and could play potentially important roles in mitosis. I have carried out further studies on the helicase RTEL1 during my PhD thesis, uncovering a new function of this protein in the remodeling of the telomeric overhang in human cancers.
