I am currently running an auditory neuroscience lab at the Institute for Audioneurotechnology (NIFE) at Hannover Medical School, Germany. I am specialized in experimental neuroscience with a main focus on in-vivo electrophysiology in genetic mouse models and congenitally deaf cats. I am interested in brain plasticity after hearing loss and its relation to hearing restoration with cochlear implants, especially with respect to cross-modal plasticity and multisensory processing in deafness. I am also interested in changes in the aging brain with respect to auditory processing. On a technical side, I study changes of sensory sensitivity during anesthesia. I use EEG, cortical surface and microelectrode recordings in transgenic mouse models and congenital deaf cats to study these questions. Currently, I work towards a combination of neural prostheses and machine learning for classification and subsequent restoration of auditory neural representations. In addition, I started to study cognitive executive function in hearing and deaf subjects with human EEG. I studied Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Science, and Neuroscience. I received training in mathematics (algebra, analysis), computer science (algorithms, principles of AI, neural networks), logic (propositional, predicate and modal logic), linguistics (computational linguistics, pragmatics, discourse theory), cognitive psychology (statistics, psychophysics), neuroscience (neuroanatomy, neurophysiology) and philosophy (analytical philosophy). I specialized in system neuroscience and received a PhD (Dr. rer.nat) on neural signal dynamics during different brain states.
