Currently investigating the molecular mechanisms by which Salmonella avoids encounter against reactive oxygen/nitrogen species and protects itself against oxidative and nitrosative stress. These investigations will aid in understanding novel ways Salmonella adapts to oxidative and nitrosative stress, an integral defense of innate immunity. Developing novel therapeutic approaches to target Salmonella and will also be broadly applicable to many key bacterial pathogens. Expertise in developing tissue specific knock-out mice. Expertise on genome engineering and editing for prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Conducted research on Sarcopenia (skeletal muscle loss), and played a key role in the identifying signaling mechanism of skeletal muscle loss in patients with alcoholic liver disease (ALD). Conducted research on Gram-positive bacterial pathogen (S. pyogenes, S. pneumoniae and S. aureus). Characterized Tyrosine kinase and Low molecular weight Tyrosine phosphatase in S. pyogenes that are linked to virulence, drug resistance, biofilm formation, bacterial cell division and growth. Provided first evidence for the presence of tyrosine phosphorylation in S. pyogenes. Identified a novel small molecule inhibitor (Inh2-B1) against Ser/Thr protein kinase (STK1) of S. aureus. STK1 plays a critical role in antibiotic resistance in methicillin-resistant S. aureus. By targeting STK1, Inh-B1 served as an “antibiotic resistance breaker”.
