We believe that the motor carrier industry will convert to alternative fueled fleets – including battery electric, renewable diesel (R99), and hydrogen - much faster than the passenger fleet because the economics of doing so are so compelling .

LECTURE SPEECH

In this 8th quarterly edition of Are Home Deliveries Increasing during the Pandemic?, I am again providing the latest quarterly data on E-Commerce (retail) sales, development of warehouses and distribution centers for E-Commerce products, and the changes in employment of those handling, assembling, packaging, and delivering E-Commerce products. I’ve been compiling and authoring quarterly updates to the E-Commerce and Emerging Logistics Technology report I prepared for PBOT since its completion in December 2019.

CONFERENCE PAPER

A Complete Street design concept was developed and constructed for NE 13th Street between NE 4th and NE 9th Avenues in the City of Ft. Lauderdale’s South Middle River neighborhood The design redevelops the minor arterial four-lane road into a Complete Street with the following features: reduce to two-lane road; replace travel lanes with bicycle lanes and on-street parking; introduce a roundabout to replace a traffic signal; provide landscaped medians; provide mid-block crossings; incorporate native landscaping, and stormwater management design including bioswales, pave drains, and water catchment systems .

Achieving the Climate Action Plan goals and challenges of accommodating freight movement within an increasingly dense Central City environment requires ongoing partnerships among the business community, local governments, community interests and the other stakeholders. The Central City Sustainable Freight Strategy is designed to address these issues and enhance our ability to reduce emissions and fuel usage even further. The following actions were recommended by City staff, the Sustainable Freight Working Group and the Portland Freight Committee for implementing the Central City Sustainable Freight Strategy: t
Prepare a comprehensive truck loading and parking plan to increase the efficient use of public right-of-way space. t
Develop a best practices street design guide for the safe and efficient movement of delivery vehicles. t
Identify incentives to encourage unattended delivery depots and other “last mile” delivery solutions. t
Apply zoning provisions to allow centralized freight distribution districts to freely operate and to increase industrial-based employment densities. t
Implement an off-hour delivery pilot program for the Central City. t
Explore partnership opportunities to provide financial and other incentives to purchase/lease electric-hybrid delivery vehicles and install charging stations. t
Coordinate with other City bureaus and outside agencies to develop strategies to increase the use of rail, barge and other multi-modal freight options .
