My career in research started with a degree in Genetics and Molecular Biology followed by a British Society of Physiology Summer Studentship investigating the recruitment of white blood cells to an inflammatory stimulus. This was succeeded by a venture into Immunology and Infectious Diseases for my Ph.D. Here, we identified proteins that were important in the innate immune response to pathogenic fungi in the lungs of transplant recipients. My first post-doctoral position was concerned with exploring the in vivo role of an uncharacterised cell membrane receptor. This resulted in the identification of a receptor that was critical for the immune response to Aspergillus fumigatus, a prevalent fungal pathogen of the developed world. In order to eventually become a world-leader in my field, I switched fields and obtained skills in pharmacology, drug discovery, molecular modelling, and electrophysiology. My current role entails investigating a family of receptors found on adipocytes (fat cells) and their effect on metabolism, with the ultimate aim of identifying new drug targets to prevent cardiovascular disease. My expertise lie within academic writing, analysis, and creative thinking. I feel my varied scientific experiences allow me to approach common questions from a different viewpoint. I spend a lot of my free time dabbling in art and musical composition and would like to combine my creativity and academic know-how to solve complex challenges.
