Hallo there! My name is Stefania, I’m a biomedical engineer and a systems biologist. And a writer. I’m currently a postdoc at King’s College, in London (UK). I have previously worked for The Crick Institute (London, UK) and, before that, at ETH Zurich (Switzerland), where I got my PhD in Systems biology. I have a strong fascination for communicating science in a clear, logical, detailed but concise, and, when suitable, entertaining way. Writing is… my space of pure freedom. I am currently employed, as a postdoctoral researcher, in the Translational Systems Biology group of Dr Shoaie at King’s College London. Our group is investigating human microbiomes using next generation sequencing technologies. I am leading two projects, and collaborating with several others. In a nutshell, I analyse the sequencing data, extract scientific stories from the results, and write papers. Also, given my clear interest and, I suppose, even skill in communicating science, I am often helping with the paper and grant writing of the whole group – even my supervisor. After graduating in Biomedical Engineering, I have been in science for fourteen years. During this time, I have worked in several different fields. Briefly, I first worked in an orthopaedic hospital in Milan, where I investigated the alterations of cartilaginous tissues by magnetic resonance imaging. I then moved to Switzerland, where I obtained my PhD in Systems Biology in the group of Ruedi Aebersold, at ETH Zurich. For my PhD, I learned to perform wet lab experiments, to work with mass spectrometers and, especially, to look at biological questions from an “omics” point of view. After my PhD I moved to London. I first worked in neuroscience at The Crick Institute, and then in microbiology at King’s College. Both these postdoctoral experiences were still “omics” oriented, but each group had very unique requirements, and followed extremely different methods. Overall, I believe these experiences have widened my perspective, teaching me to quickly adapt to and learn each new topic and method of investigation. Besides my interest in scientific research, I’ve found myself, over the years, more and more excited by communicating science in a logical, detailed but concise, and, when suitable, entertaining way. I have attended scientific (or creative) writing courses, have published several scientific papers, am always keen to help friends and colleagues with their writing tasks – and also enjoy writing just for the pleasure of it.
