I have had for many years, a deep interest in the complexity and sophistication that underpins the cellular functions vital for life. In particular, I have a great love of protein interaction networks with my DPhil thesis, “The Investigation of the OS-9/Grp94 interaction and its role in Endoplasmic Reticulum Associated Degradation (ERAD)”, focusing on quality control within the ER, namely the recognition and subsequent degradation of misfolded proteins. In particular, I focused on the mapping of protein interactions through the generation of tagged truncated and/or mutated constructs, their transfection into mammalian cell culture and the subsequent isolation of interaction complexes through co-precipitation with analysis via SDS-PAGE/immunoblotting. These results were complimented by experiments employing immunofluorescence, shRNA and through the generation/purification of recombinant proteins, with the resultant data published in Molecular Biology of the Cell in a paper titled: “OS-9 Facilitates Turnover of Non-native GRP94 Marked by Hyper-glycosylation”. In addition to standard problem solving, my DPhil also provided the trials and experience of establishing a lab from the ground up. As the sole member of a new lab, I was confronted with a steep learning curve with the initiative and interpersonal skills required to seek out help and advice a necessity. In addition to my scientific experience, I reveal in organisational and team based challenges. I have been deeply involved in the Merton College Middle Common Room (MCR) Oxford, acting in four committee positions including President (2011-2012), a role which entailed leadership, representation, negotiations and ensuring productive relationships both internally (between fellows and staff) and externally (between the university, colleges and alumni). An additional ability which I acquired at Oxford, that I am particularly passionate about, is rowing. It requires extreme commitment, a high level of motivation and it is, in my opinion the ultimate team sport. From a complete novice, I dedicated myself to the hard work required to successfully race as a member of the Oxford University Women’s Boat Club, successfully defeating Cambridge (Osiris, 2012) and subsequently acting as Vice-President (2013). Juggling of academia, rowing and the MCR committee ensured I gained a very wide ranging skill set, including extreme time management, establishing links with sponsors, logistics of large and small event management, people management and conflict resolution within a team.
