Hi there! I'm a synthetic chemist with an interest in how automation and data science (supplemented with good ol' chemistry intuition) can transform my discipline. My formal scientific training is solidly traditional organic chemistry (total synthesis PhD in Oxford), but my skillset is multidisciplinary. Some highlights: - I have used robotics to set up thousands of reactions at a time. These screening experiments have helped find the best conditions to prepare important medicinal chemistry targets. - I have designed 96-well screening kits for key reactions (e.g., Buchwald‒Hartwig amination, Negishi coupling, Hartwig‒Miyaura borylation, and others). To accomplish this, I had to collate, study, and internalise vast swathes of the scientific literature. - I am a self-taught coder (Python). I am... still not very good, but am continually developing this skill so I can use it in my high-throughput experimentation (HTE) research to automate my workflow and process the enormous quantities of data HTE work naturally churns out. - Besides total synthesis, I am exceptionally well-read in synthetic methodology, both in classic methods and in emerging "hot" fields (photoredox chemistry, electrochemistry, C‒H activation, HTE). - I have conducted lectures for my department on industrially relevant synthetic chemistry literature. I discuss not only the transformations themselves, but also the principles underpinning these reactions (e.g., catalyst design, reagent choice, mechanistic studies). These lectures for my colleagues have inspired synthesis ideas for med chem projects. - Rather excitingly, I have just taken up a new role as a senior scientist (process chemistry) in Pfizer. It's a great job and I am learning a lot from my capable new colleagues. I value technical mastery and believe that the best scientists are simply the ones who know the most about their craft. To work towards this ideal, I study voraciously, and read specialist textbooks and scientific journal articles as a hobby in my free time. Back in school, I won many chemistry awards; I did my PhD in Oxford under the auspices of a Clarendon Scholarship (awarded to top 2% of cohort), and captained two university teams in the 6th and 7th RSC/SCI National Retrosynthesis Competitions, placing 2nd and 3rd respectively. As an undergraduate in the National University of Singapore (NUS), I graduated a year early as the Valedictorian and best overall student of my seniors' cohort (200 students).
